FAQ’s About Food Labelling
BEST BEFORE DATES ARE ABOUT QUALITY – also identified as BBE (Best Before End) – this is all about the quality of the product, and not safety. BBE is an indicative guide of when the quality of food or drink, basically this means if stored correctly it will live a long life, some for many years after the BBE.
Best before end dates should be considered a rough guide, rather than a strict rule. There is no reason to throw away food that goes past its best before end date. Please read the government guidelines here
USE BY DATES ARE ABOUT SAFETY – is all about food safety. Foods can be eaten until the use by date, but not after. You will see use by dates on food that goes off quickly, such as dairy products or ready-to-eat salads. Carefully follow the storage instructions – for example, if the instructions on the packaging tell you to refrigerate after opening, you should keep the food in a fridge at 5 degrees or below.
After the use by date, don’t eat, cook or freeze it. The food could be unsafe to eat or drink, even if it has been stored correctly and looks/smells fine.
A lot of foods including meat and milk can be frozen before the use by date, so you can extend the life of these products. Read the manufacturers labelling for guidance on how long to store once frozen.
